Our sensory systems are constantly at work to help us do everything we need to each day. When our sensory systems are not working together in an optimal way, we may have trouble with daily tasks such as dressing or eating, managing our emotions and interactions with others, handling transitions or different environments, playing sports or focusing at school (just to name a few!). At Sensory Tree, sensory integration is at the heart of our treatment sessions.
Often referred to as emotional regulation or self-regulation, having a regulated nervous system allows us to face the challenges of every day life with relative ease. Sometimes sensory challenges may keep our bodies stuck in fight or flight, making nervous system regulation difficult. We embed regulating activities into our treatment sessions and equip you with the tools to help your child regulate in their daily life.
We are all born with primitive reflexes that help protect us and help us gain new skills through infancy and toddlerhood. These reflexes are expected to integrate during certain time frames to pave the way for us to acquire more advanced skills. Sometimes these reflexes linger for longer than they should or re-appear; this may or may not cause any functional difficulties. If it is suspected that reflexes are causing difficulties for your child, we can embed integrating activities into therapy and provide you with ways to help at home.
